📲 Secure instant messaging (chat)
Instant messaging is convenient, but it usually depends on actors we are asked to trust, such as WhatsApp or Telegram, and they are not trustworthy. WhatsApp monetizes the metadata of our conversations. Telegram, by default, does not provide end-to-end encryption for chats, and its security largely depends on trusting Pavel Durov and his engineers. Telegram is headquartered in a country that does not respect human rights (Dubai, United Arab Emirates).
Delta Chat solves this problem with a modern messaging application (Android, iOS, Windows, Linux) that relies on solid, secure, existing protocols such as email and OpenPGP to enable secure communication. Because it is built on email, no central entity controls the conversation metadata. I highly recommend it; it is very well thought out. Delta Chat has its own chatmail server, as they call email servers designed for chatting, but any email account works. I use one hosted on my own domain, so nobody can extract metadata from it to target me with ads.
