Dr. Pere Quintana Seguí
Presentation
Scientist at Observatori de l'Ebre (Roquetes, Spain).
Researcher in Hydrology, Climate and Meteorology.
I study how soil, vegetation, atmosphere and human societies interact within our watersheds, in a context of climate change. My research focuses on distributed hydrological modeling, analysis of climate extremes such as droughts and floods, and the impact of climate change and human action on water resources.
I work with hydrological and meteorological data, hydrological models and satellite data to better understand the evolution of water resources. From the Observatori de l'Ebre, I contribute to national and international research projects that seek solutions to the water challenges of the 21st century.

- 05/02/2026: 🌍 This week I attended the ESA DTE Components Conference at ESRIN. I return with the conviction that the main bottleneck we face today is bringing science to society, that is, ensuring that our data and algorithms are capable of aiding decision-making. In this sense, the work of generating digital twins seems very appropriate, but I am also clear that we must intensify contacts with potential users (administrations, companies, citizens, etc.) and carefully consider the appropriate scale for working with these twins (which will differ for each one): local, regional, national, European, or global. We are working in this direction in the DTE Hydrology Next, Life eCOadapt50 and Life Pyrenees4Clima projects. We are in the midst of a learning process. I believe there are many questions to answer in this regard. We have a long way to go. In any case, it is interesting to see the community's progress.
- 29/01/2026: 🤖 Today, January 29, 2026, I launched BiblioAssistant, a personal project to automate the tracking of new scientific literature in the fields of hydrology, climate, and meteorology. With this system, the portal biblio.quintanasegui.com is also born, where I will publish the automatically generated summaries.
- 28/01/2026: 🛰️ Next week I will participate in the ESA Digital Twin Earth Components: Open Science Meeting 2026, which will take place at ESRIN (Frascati, Italy). I will present the poster "A comparative assessment of machine learning and a multilayer physical model with data assimilation for root-zone soil moisture estimation", the result of joint work with Judith Cid Jiménez, Maria José Escorihuela, and Anaïs Barella-Ortiz.
- 22/01/2026: 🆕 I have created this new section to write down the latest news. I have added some news from the last few months. I hope to keep it updated. I find it good to have a history here, independent of social networks.
- 21/01/2026: 🏛️ The Government of Catalonia has changed the affiliation department of the Ebre Observatory. We are leaving the Dept. of Territory and moving to Research and Universities. This is very good news that should give a new boost to our institution.
- 15/01/2026: 📺 Climate discussion on Canal TE. Together with Òscar Saladié (URV) and Carles Alcaraz (IRGA) we were discussing climate change and its impacts. It was a very pleasant conversation and I hope also useful for the public.
- 10/01/2026: 🎓 I had the pleasure of participating in the thesis committee of Kaoutar Oukaddour at Cadi Ayyad University in Marrakech. The thesis, titled "Sécheresse : Risque, vulnérabilité et mesures d'adaptation à l'échelle du bassin hydraulique du Tensift au Maroc", is an interesting contribution to knowledge on drought dynamics in an area with very limited resources and great human impact.
- 16/10/2025: 🌊 The Flood Observatory of Catalonia is launched, a collegiate body that will serve to improve technical knowledge, institutional coordination, and decision-making regarding a phenomenon that increasingly affects the Catalan territory as a consequence of climate change. It is an honor to have been trusted to be part of it.
- 06/10/2025: 📄 We participated in a study comparing the different temperature grids currently available in Spain. These studies are very necessary and interesting. The conclusion is that one cannot say which is the best product, it all depends on the specific needs.
